when i try to run the game in pSX v1.13 (latest) i get an error that says 'CD not usable: Failed to read .cue file'
I have tried running it in ePSXe and it works in that, but with some audio issues and stuttering when loading spells.
I prefer using pSX, is there any way to get the game to work with that emulator?

the ePSXe problems can probably be fixed with an emulator configuration change, no clue what's causing the problem for the other emu though
try these on ePSXe, they run FFT very well

figured out pSX's problem, here's the fix for anyone interested:
The game must be mounted and run as a CD, you can't run it as an ISO like most games (oddly enough you can run an unpatched FFT iso). So you'll need a program like DAEMON tools lite (which is free).

also, in regards to ePSXe --- under the audio options, i only have that first check box for enabling sound... i dont have 'enable CDDA Sound' or XA sound... using the same plugin though...

Never had that problem, pSX ran my FFT ISO perfectly. It could be that mine is different, since I've got the main .bin file and a .cue file as well (the latter isn't really needed since pSX can guess the type of the CD pretty accurately).

SOLVED
Fixed it!
pSX v1.13 is a much better emulator, at least for Windows 7 users with 64-bit. Less hassle, easier setup, and smoother gameplay. IMO
Create your own .cue file. The ppf-o-matic30.exe apparently does something to the image that makes pSX expect a .cue file, that you may not have. All you have to do to fix this is to create your own .cue file.
If you want a Playstation 1 or 2 cue throw this into notepad and save the file as "image.cue":
FILE "IMAGE.BIN" BINARY
TRACK 1 MODE2/2352
INDEX 1 00:00:00
Change "image.bin" to the name of your image. In my case, it was "final_fantasy_tactics.bin".
Change "image.cue" to match the name of your image. In my case it was "final_fantasy_tactics.cue".
Make sure to put the .cue file into the same folder where your image is.
That's it!
Now it's time for me to dive into this insane difficulty version.
Before I go, I just want to say "THANK YOU" to the creator, all of the supporters, and this forum. I've played this game for thousands of hours without the patch, and I'm looking forward to the challenge.

This fix doesnt work for me. I'm still having the same problem with it not seeing a "cue" file even though I created one and placed it in the CDimage folder.

pSX had some problems in my pc with optional content in chapter 4, using Epsxe solved this for me so watch out for that.

I disagree with that. I used PSX for a very long time, however, EPSXE has more options, and the use of soft plugins looks really bad to me. (EPSXE you can choose)
However, PSX is much easier to set up.
